NEW DELHI: The Delhi University undergraduate imbroglio appears to have speeded up the government's decision to restructure the higher education regulatory set up.
In a reply to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said that the government was considering setting up a high level of committee of experts to suggest a comprehensive restructuring and revamping of the higher education regulator, University Grants Commission.
Ministry sources said that the ministry would be focusing on "a clean up" and "restructuring" of the University Grants Commission in the wake of the controversy ahead of the roll back of the four year undergraduate programme in Delhi University.
The restructuring efforts would not be limited to the UGC, sources indicated that the All India Council for Technical Education and the National Council for Teacher Education would also be looked into.
