| UGC asks IISc, Bangalore to drop 4-year BS degree course | published on : 08-07-2014 | Category : University Grant Commission | After the scrapping the 4-year undergraduate degree course at Delhi University, University of Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, Symbiosis International University, Pune and Shiv Nadar University, Noida to drop the 4-year degree course. HRD Minister, Smriti Irani said, "The UGC has reported that these universities have been asked to discontinue such programmes and follow the UGC notification on specification of degrees," These universities were conducting 4-year degree course in Science and Arts discipline. The 4-year BS course in IISc was established in 2011, and it has been running successfully without any glitches. More than 400 students have enrolled at present. The course is divided into 8 semesters covering disciplines like Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. Chandan Dasgupta, Dean, undergraduate programmes said, "We have received communication from the UGC, but we have not been asked to either discontinue the course or change it to the three-year format. The first letter we received was asking for information and the second one asking why we are offering this course. So as of now, the course remains." When UGC asked to scrap the course, Prof Dasguta said that,"We will take the interest of the students. Currently we have 4 batches and we will make sure they go out with an proper degree." One of the student in Bangalore, Krishnan S Iyer said that he does not want to discontinue the course. "This course is helping students get exposure, especially in the field of basic sciences. Even the industry prefers people who come from the interdisciplinary approach and it is one of the few programmes in the country that incorporates research at the UG level," said Iyer. | Related Keywords : | IISc BS degree Bangalore |
