Christian Era. Ancient Sangam classics like the Purananooru, Natrinai and
Agananooru refer to Poraiyar. The famous poet kalladanar praises the chieftain of
Poraiyar in Puram 391. Poraiyar is referred to as a port town is Munturai. It is likely
that the sea with was originally skirting Poraiyar has receded subsequent to the second
century A.D by about a mile. Poraiyar continued to play important role in the history of
