Abstract :

This paper focuses light on the squalor and sordidness described by T.S.Eliot in his poem 'Preludes'. Many poets, dramatists and novelists have presented dull and dirty life in the city in their writing. William Blake had displayed poverty and ill treatment in his poem “London”. The poem opens with the introduction of the theme of oppression and suffering reflected in every face as the poet wanders through the streets of London. T.S.Eliot wrote this poem in four interrelated parts on different setting, places, times and situations so we can call it mood pieces which deal with sordid and dull life in the city. The poem is realistic and resembles another poem by Eliot entitled 'The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock', 'The Waste Land'etc.
